Before the ensemble was founded on April 22, 2017, in Hadamar/Germany, the singers had left the Limburg Cathedral Boys' Choir after graduating from school. Singing together in their youth gave the ensemble members the desire to continue making music together in an ensemble. The time spent together with the cathedral choir does shape the choir until today, not only in terms of sound and music, but also through the deep friendships formed while singing and making music together. Although the choir's roots lie with the Limburg Cathedral Boys' Choir, today the choir is not only made up of former choirboys, but brings together many friends of male choir literature and choral music, thus continuing the long tradition of the musical region of Limburg and the alumni ensembles of the Limburg Cathedral Boys' Choir. The singers of the ensemble now live in many places throughout Germany and meet mainly in the region of Limburg for rehearsal and projects. However, rehearsal have already led the choir to Bacharach, Bad Kreuznach, and Wiesbaden in Germany.
From its founding in 2017 until 2020, the choir was conducted by Jakob Deckers followed by the joint musical leadership and conducting of Jakob Deckers and Fabian Fante from 2020 to 2025. Since January 2026, Emanuel Hecker has been the new conductor of the Ensemble, supported by Fabian Fante as the ensemble's musical assistant.
Since its founding, Ensemble Sonamento has given numerous performances in the Limburg region, the Westerwald in Germany, and beyond, including in Frankfurt, Aachen, Wertheim, or Stuttgart. In May 2019, the choir successfully participated in the competition at the 2nd Limburg Men's Choir Festival, receiving a gold diploma and the special prize for the best interpretation of a contemporary choral work. In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, the choir organized “sonamento@home,” an extensive online concert to promote and support musical and cultural diversity, which attracted considerable attention far beyond the borders of Limburg. In 2021, the ensemble received a scholarship from the Foundation of the Kreissparkasse Limburg for the promotion of talented local musicians for its musical achievements and finally achieved the first place in the Hessian Choir Competition in Schlitz in November 2022 (Hessischer Chorwettbewerb), qualifying as the best Hessian choir for the 11th German Choir Competition 2023 in Hanover (Deutscher Chorwettbewerb). In Hanover, the Ensemble received the rating “participated with very good success” (3rd prize) and was also awarded the special prize of the Walter and Charlotte Hamel Foundation for outstanding musical achievements. In September 2024, the young choir released its first CD, "wie still. wie weit." (English translation: “How quiet. How far.”), featuring Romantic works for male choir, which is also available on all common streaming platforms. In 2025, the Ensemble made its international debut on its first trip abroad with a concert and cultural tour to Mexico, which was financially supported by the Goethe-Institut, with performances and concerts in Mexico City, Puebla, Querétaro, and San Miguel de Allende.
